Desert Breath

D.A.ST Arteam

Eastern Sahara, Egypt, 1997

Desert Breath is a group project created by D.A.ST. Arteam, (Danae Stratou, Alexandra Stratou, Stella Constantinides). It is an Earth Work that covers 100.000 m2, in the eastern Sahara desert bordering the Red Sea in Egypt. Its construction consists of the displacement of 8.000 m3 of sand formed so as to create precise positive and negative conical volumes. The conical volumes form two interlocking spirals that move out from a common centre with a phase difference of 180 degrees in the same direction of rotation. The centre is a 30-metre diameter vessel formed in a W-shaped section and filled with water to its rim.

The construction of Desert Breath began in June 1995 and was completed in March 1997 when it’s inauguration took place with the presence of a wide international audience and press.

Desert Breath still exists becoming through its slow disintegration, an instrument to measure the passage of time.

  • To visit Desert Breath in person you may contact us through this website.

Here are some initial tips: The best way to experience Desert Breath would be for visitors to go from el Gouna or from the main highway and to cross towards the mountains so as to get to the Oasis which is on the foot of the mountain just behind Desert Breath.

From El Gouna, the best way to visit Desert Breath, is to rent a car, or a bicycle. Once you get to the El Gouna gate, turn right. You will see Desert Breath on your right shortly after you have turned. After you see Desert Breath, you will see a service road that runs toward the direction of the mountain. This is the road you need to take, but you have to drive a little further to reach a UTurn point. Yo then go up service road and see Desert Breath on your left. Park on the road and walk to Desert Breath.
The best time to visit Desert Breath is sunrise – early morning and before sunset.

You will also find information about Desert Breath in the information centre in Tamr Henna downtown, as well as in the Library. This whole journey from Oasis to D.B. and back probably takes about an hour or so in total. The link bellow will take you to the Google map of the area.
